Fall Travel Days 8,9,10,11,12 PA, NJ, and Home! Finally back in the office! When we last left off, Id just finished my Philly school visits. I visited Girls High (Alias alma mater), then drove downtown to JR Masterman, then back up to Central. Those of you who live in Philly know that Girls High and Central are practically next door to one another, so sticking the Masterman visit in the middle wasnt exactly ideal. But thats how scheduling works sometimes the schools call the shots, not the traveler. :-) I got to see a lot of the city that day, which was neat for me because I was actually born in Philly. My parents moved to Baltimore when I was two, which is where I grew up. But now that my mom has moved back, Id really like to get to know the city better and this was a great way to begin doing so. So that was Monday. Monday night I actually had the night off, so I took my mom out to dinner at Tangerine. Not cheap, but Id been eating junk for a week so I treated myself. Philly people: definitely check out Tangerine if you havent already. Yum. Tuesday I woke up and drove to East Brunswick HS in NJ to meet with the guidance staff there. After a fun meeting with about 10 counselors, I drove around Jersey a little bit, ending up at Chilis where I had a nice dinner with Joe DiLiberto, the regional EC chair for central NJ. The Central Jersey meeting went well that night; nothing out of the ordinary. Had a great time with Joe; hope to see him again next year. Wednesday morning found me driving to Hackensack for the Northern NJ school visits central meeting. Disclaimer: I love Jersey. I spent every summer of my childhood on the Jersey shore. The people in New Jersey are some of the nicest people in the world. But driving in Jersey? Thats another story. Youd think that I, having lived in Boston for 7 years, would be able to handle anything (Boston was designed for horses and never updated, and The Big Dig has just made everything worse). But Jersey dude. Next time I am taking Laura, Akash, or Erin with me its as simple as that. First school visit was in Jersey City. Anyone familiar with the road that is somehow both Route 1 and Route 9 at the same time? I think it took me 2 hours to go a mile. :-) But when I finally got to McNair, a bunch of kids came to see me, so that was rewarding. Then a fun drive back to Hackensack, where I dined with the Northern New Jersey ECs at Solaris. Northern NJ was cool because all of the ECs seemed to go way back, so the dinner was highly entertaining and fun. Dale Krouse, the regional EC chair, is simply a wonderful host. The Northern NJ central meeting at AAST was great. Their theater is amazing, and I had lots of help from AAST students Brooke and Georgia who ran tech for me. They gave me a fish, on which they had written Ben > Matt sorry Matt, but Ben wears a tie. Thanks guys. :-) (See Matt? Its all about the tie!) Thursday morning I met first with students and then with the guidance staff at AAST. This was a truly wonderful school visit; the counselors and I had a really amazing conversation about admissions and MIT. Thursday afternoon I drove back to Philly to catch my 5:30 flight to Boston. Arriving way early, I asked to switch to the 4:30. The dude driving the baggage truck backed into the planes taillight; by the time they fixed it, it was after 7PM. The 5:30 (my original flight) took off on time. Grrrrrr! Anyway, finally got home late Thursday night, and spent Friday and the weekend hanging with the kids and responding to the 14,376 emails that were in my in-box. Hope you guys had a good weekend! Personal Narrative A Trip to Paris Essay From a young age, Ive been drawn to vintage and antique furniture, clothes and household items. Not only they do have their own unique energy, but they also carry spirit and history of the past. There is something mysterious and magical about vintage and antique elements. When I got the opportunity to travel to Paris I right away made a list of places that I wanted to visit. On the top of my list was Paris’s largest Flea and antique market, the famous Marchà ¨ aux Puces de Saint-Ouen. The very next day after my arrival I got ready for an adventure to the 14th arrondissement. The market was just outside of Paris near the Porte de Clignancourt. Since it tends to close up early in the afternoon, I woke up early as I could. It was a beautiful sunny summer morning and I was full of excitement. I step out of the apartment and head five blocks toward the metro. Just before I got to the metro station I stopped at the corner of a pastry shop and picked up a freshly baked crispy croissant and a cup of delicious coffee. I felt cool sensation in my chest either from drinking coffee or from overwhelming excitement. I entered the metro station and it took me about 40 min to get to the place. Once I got out of the station I found myself in a very diverse neighborhood. There was a great mix of Africans, Arabs and foreigners. The streets were dirty, crowded and had odors of strange foods cooking. I quickly started following my maps direction. In order for me to get to the antique market I had to go through a street market where immigrants from all over the world were selling cheap merchandize. The sellers yelled â€Å"Madam, Madam† from all sides of the market. I called my friend to express my disappointment. And once the vendors heard me speaking Russian , they started to call me â€Å" Natasha†. Uh, how dare they! I felt like there was no end to it. There were hundreds of stands selling anything from small electronics to Adidas sport items, but there were no antiques. I came to the point where I could not tolerate the crowds and annoying vendors any longer and then I saw a large antiquish looking entry gate. It was hard not to be instantly impressed by its elegantly rustic design. After I passed through the gate, the market was a labyrinth, one narrow street after another. It was very fascinating. I couldn’t believe how many little shops there were and all of them had their own personality. Some specialized in vintage clothing, some in household items, and some in vintage costumes and jewelry. The market managed to keep its old charm and unique character through its traditional Parisian settings with outdoor tables and bright flowers. Walking by each of them you could see everything from vintage chandeliers and silver to architectural elements, and all other things practical and whimsical. I went through very narrow streets filled with shops. It was crowded and people were moving slow. As soon as I approached the corner I heard the music, jazz inspired piano music. There was a shop a few doors down the side street. Its massive wooden door with brass handles and uncommon large circular brass lock looked unusual. At first I didnt think it was open. I pressed my face against of the small store window and looked inside, shading my eyes from the sun with my hands. Suddenly, I saw a pair of dark eyes looking back at me. I almost jumped! There was a woman working on the window display. She smiled and motioned for me to come in. Braddock’s Expedition The war of Monongahela commenced in 1755, near the location of contemporary-day Braddock, Pennsylvania. After it ended, over five hundred British forces lay dead and approximately five hundred were wounded . Only three hundred managed to escape the menace uninjured including George Washington . Edward Braddock, a British commander had been fatally wounded and succumbed to injuries several days later. Braddock’s men suffered badly from the initial stages of the war. The Tactics used by Indians were supremely appropriate for woodland battle. Dunbar’s forces set camp at Great Meadows, the dawdlers started arriving with information concerning Braddock’s defeat. Fear and panic spread throughout the entire camp at the imagination that the enemy might attack. The following day most of the troops went back home together with most of the teams and wagons, abandoning the helpless and wounded. Due to the nature of Daniel’s work, he was among those in the wagon trains when Braddock’s forces were assaulted and nearly eliminated by an Indian and French alliance; instead of materials, Daniel found himself ferrying wounded soldiers . The condition on the Virginia frontier and Pennsylvania was ominous. The Braddock’s defeat left the border open for the murdering and robbing of the border populace. S revolutionary War started at the skirmish of Concord and Lexington, the Congress established the famous Continental Army. The Congress gathered and called for creation of rifle firms from colonies to assist the Boston Siege and General Washington was named the commander of the army. It permitted the recruitment of twenty thousand men into the army. Congress also required ten firms of riflemen to be called into service in Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania states. Among the companies provided by Virginia State, Daniel Morgan was chosen as the leader of one rifle firm by the commission of Frederick County through an undisputed vote . Daniel’s first significant assignment surfaced in 1775, when worked in Benedict Arnold’s voyage that attacked Canada . How Insects Provide Evidence That a Murder Victim Was Moved

In some suspicious death investigations, arthropod evidence may prove that the body was moved at some point after death. Crime scene insects can tell whether the body decomposed at the location where it was found, and even reveal gaps in the crime time line. When Insects at the Crime Scene Dont Belong There The entomologist first identifies all the collected arthropod evidence, cataloging the species present on or near the body. Not every insect belongs in every habitat. Some live in quite specific niches – on limited vegetation types, at certain elevations, or in particular climates. What if the body yields an insect that is not known to live in the area where it was found? Wouldnt that suggest the body had been moved? In his book A Fly for the Prosecution, forensic entomologist M. Lee Goff tells of one such case. He collected evidence from a womans body found in an Oahu sugar cane field. He noted that some of the maggots present were a species of fly found in urban areas, not in agricultural fields. He hypothesized that the body had remained in an urban location long enough for the flies to find it, and that it was later moved to the field. Sure enough, when the murder was solved, his theory proved correct. The killers kept the victims body in an apartment for several days while trying to decide what to do with it. When Insects at the Crime Scene Dont Fit the Timeline Sometimes insect evidence reveals a gap in the time line, and leads investigators to the conclusion that the body was moved. The primary focus of forensic entomology is the establishment of the postmortem interval, using insect life cycles. A good forensic entomologist will give detectives an estimate, to the day or even the hour, of when the body was first colonized by insects. Investigators compare this estimate with witness accounts of when the victim was last seen alive. Where was the victim between when he was last seen and when insects first invaded his corpse? Was he alive, or was the body hidden somewhere? Again, Dr. Goffs book provides a good example of a case where insect evidence established such a time gap. A body found on April 18th yielded only first instar maggots, some still emerging from their eggs. Based on his knowledge of this insects life cycle in the environmental conditions present at the crime scene, Dr. Goff concluded that the body had only been exposed to insects since the previous day, the 17th. According to witnesses, the victim was last seen alive two days prior, on the 15th. It seemed that the body must have been somewhere else, protected from exposure to any insects, in the interim. In the end, the murderer was caught and revealed he had killed the victim on the 15th, but kept the body in the trunk of a car until dumping it on the 17th. How Insects in the Soil Help Solve a Murder A dead body lying on the ground will release all its fluids into the soil below. As a result of this seepage, the soil chemistry changes substantially. Native soil organisms leave the area as the pH rises. A whole new community of arthropods inhabit this gruesome niche. A forensic entomologist will sample the soil below and near where the body was lying. The organisms found in the soil samples can determine whether the body decomposed at the location where it was found, or prior to being dumped there.
